| Once a person is convicted, they should be held responsible for their conduct. When there are no consequences, criminals will continue to commit crime. Moreover, failure to impose consequences suggests that people are not responsible for their conduct and needlessly places innocent bystanders at risk.
We hear too often about criminals with 10, 15 or even 20 DUIs. One person with 124 arrests was released on bond after his 125th arrest. Another having pled guilty to burglary, no-contest to arson and facing 13 and a half years in prison was given a suspended sentence and released into the general public. He is now accused of raping a minor. New Mexico was ranked second place among the most dangerous states according to prevalence of six major crimes. We can do better. Why aren’t we?
